Welcome to the Vermont Continuing Education Wiki!

This Wiki is intended to provide a space to have a conversation about the future of Vermont's Public Library Certification Program. Thank you for visiting and contributing to the discussion.

Introduction

The current Public Library Certification Program was originally created to provide formal education for public library directors.

While it continues to do so, there are also many library staff members who are not directors participating in the program and attaining certification. It goes without saying that the DOL encourages all library staff members to further their library education. On a practical level, this is becoming increasingly difficult and frustrating within the current setup. For non-director library staff members trying to attend the workshops, it can be frustrating to be denied access. For the DOL, it is frustrating to have to turn people away.

One of my primary goals here is to alleviate the congestion in the required courses while providing programs that are tailored to everyone's needs.

Program Design

Currently, the certification program includes these features:

Core Courses: There are four required courses: Reference, Collection Development, Cataloging, and Basic Public Library Administration.

Technology Hours: 10 hours of technology-related workshops are required.

Total Hours: A total of 150 hours is required for certification.
